Piya Tora Kaisa Abhimaan....

Suddenly stumbled upon this song from the movie 'Raincoat'. Had totally forgotten it. Shubha Mudgal's voice and Gulzar's poetry makes it an awesomely enchanting combination. The movie was slow. but I think the song made a strong impact in the movie. Its continuously playing in the background during the main Aishwarya-Ajay part of the movie. The song ,esp.Gulzar's lines portray the helplessness and lonelyness of Aishwarya's character really well. A very moving poetry, I would say. Here are Gulzaar's lines...

Kisi mausam ka jhonka tha jo is deewar par latki hui tasweer tirchi kar gaya hai
gaye sawan mein ye deewarein yun seeli nahin thi
na jane kyon is dafa inme seelan aa gayi hai,
dararein par gayi hain
aur seelan is tarah bahti hai jaise,
khushq rukhraron pe geele aanso chalte hain.

ye baarish gungunati thi isi chat ki munderon par
ye baarish gungunati thi isi chat ki munderon par
ye ghar ki khidkiyon ke kaanch par ungli se likh jaati thi sandese
girti rahti hai baithi hui ab band roshandano ke peeche.

dupehrein aisi lagti hain,
bina muhron ke khaali khaane rakhein hain
na koi khelne waala hai baazi
aur na koi chaal chalta hai

na din hota hai ab na raat hoti hai sabhi kutch ruk gaya hai
wo kya mausam ka jhonka tha
jo is deewar par latki hui tasweer tirchi kar gaya hai

There is a version in Hariharan's voice as well. That is haunting too. I liked the one in Shubha Mudgals voice better. It sounds more sad and just loved the effect it makes throughout the movie.
Hatz off to Gulzaar who can write such an awesome lyrics. Shubha Mudgal and Hariharan have sung too good as ever.

' nahi aaye kesariya balama hamar.....angana bada sunsaan.. Piya tora kaisa abhimaan....'

Hi Sharvari... Everytime i listen to this song, i'm lost. The lyrics, the voice, the hoot, the rhythm ... my goodness... its an awesome lovely patho. I need to know what the second stanza says:

Bol Sakhi kaahe kari saajo singhaar,
Na pahinab ab sanaa kaanchana haar,
Khaali chandan lagaao angmaa hamaar
chandan garala samaan

Got a clear picture on it? Care to share :) TIA

Hello,

Thanks a lot for the lyrics. i was
looking for the lyrics last few days when i again heard this song
after a long time. It was hard for me to pick it out from the audio.
Gulzars lyrics explore a different
emotional space.......Thanks.

@ Maesiva: It means :
Dear Friend, tell me why you dress up so? Why the pains of making me wear all this jewellery? Just rubbing chandan (supposedly sandalwood beautifies women) on me should suffice. But then again, for me, the chandan nothing different from poison.

Lovely lyrics :)

dress me up so*

@ Sreeja
But, does it suit the boy saying his girl "why you dress me up so?" ?
Might it be "why do you adorn yourself so?" ?

If the later is true, then the whole meaning of the stanza will change into opposite !

Just curious to know the meaning of such a beautiful song. Thank you Sreeja.

The song is beautiful, haunting. I actually like Hariharan's version better, and being a huuuuge fan of Shubha Mudgal that's rather uncharacteristic for me. But I just find HH's voice more mellow, grave and plaintive than SM's here... But can someone tell me what these lines mean exactly?

Saghan saawan laayi, Kadam bahaar,
Mathura se doli laaye, chaaron kahaar
